Gaylord G. Starin "Doc" 1922-2026

"Doc" Starin passed away June 15, 2026 at the age of 104. He was a long time resident of Soda Bay, Kelseyville and Lakeport, and was involved in the American Legion Tredway Post 194, Hartley Masonic Lodge 199, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2015, Kelseyville Lions Club and the Lakeport Senior Center.

Gaylord Grant Starin ("Doc") was born May 1, 1922 in Latham, New York. His youth was spent working with his father, Charles Starin, Jr., in various states through the Great Depression and later building military bases. In WWII, he joined the US Army Air Corps as a navigator-bombardier, flying in B-24 Bombers on 35 sortie missions from North Africa and Italy, earning a Purple Heart. Returning to the states, he settled in California attending UC Berkeley and later University of the Pacific. After graduating, he spent his time between San Francisco, where he had a periodontal practice for 30 years, and Lake County where he enjoyed a second home. Upon retirement, Doc moved from Soda Bay to Kelseyville and later to Lakeport. His last few years were at Mountain View Assisted Living in Ukiah.

Doc is predeceased by his wife, LaVerne; son, Charles; and parents, Ellen and Charles Starin, Jr. He is survived by stepsons, James Johnson of Florida and Jerry Johnson of Yountville; daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Devin Hoberg of Cobb,; grandsons, Charles and Rich Hoberg of Cobb; niece and nephew, Michelle and Tom Ruffo of San Jose.

Visitation will be held at Chapel of the Lakes Mortuary on Thursday, July 2, 2026 from 9:00 to 10:30 AM with Funeral Service at 11:00 AM. A reception will follow at the Lakeport Senior Center.
